Why is NCC Asking Nigerians to Link Their NIN to Their Phone Number?
Previously, you did not need any form of identity card to purchase and register a SIM card in Nigeria.
This has led to different kinds of fraudulent activities in the country.
In a bid to tighten security loopholes, the NCC has mandated that before you can register a new SIM card or retrieve a missing SIM card, you must have a National Identification Number (NIN).
The National Communication Commision, on December 9, 2020 temporarily stopped the selling of new SIM cards until further notice to investigate if Mobile Network providers have been following the new standards set for SIM registration as directed by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy in September of 2019.
Before you can link your NIN to your mobile phone, you must have registered for a National Identification Number at an NIMC accredited centre.
You can check our article on how to register for the national identification number.
Before you link your NIN to your phone number, the personal details registered on both your NIN and SIM card have to correspond.
You cannot link the NIN if the details provided do not correspond.
If you have forgotten your NIN number, you read how to check your NIN with your mobile phone.
